Visit of the Ven Dirk Magermann

Our preacher at this morning's Harvest Festival Eucharist was the Ven Dirk Magermann, Archdeacon Emeritus of Paarl in South Africa. He preached a lively and well-received sermon on the theme of what we have to offer to God. It was good, too, to welcome a number of other visitors and new members among the more familiar faces. The coloured rays of sunlight through the Apse windows lingered on the incense smoke, lending an extra dimension to the worship, and God was present with us. May we continue to be inspired throughout the coming days.

Afterwards, over coffee and cake, we sang 'Happy birthday' to Dirk. (And what better place could there be to celebrate it?!)

Ten of us went on to Choral Evensong  at the Cathedral on their Patronal Festival, and appreciated it very much. (Dirk is 4th from the left in the photo above.) St Michael's Singers sang on their 50th anniversary, beginning with the hauntingly beautiful setting of 'My house shall be called a house of prayer' by Herbert Howells. During the service, a splendid new thurible designed by a descendant of Sir Basil Spence was dedicated. The Dean preached, and made reference to the statue of St Michael which is on the East (liturgical North) wall of the Cathedral. We stopped to admire it after the service.

Thank you to those who helped out in any way today; to Margaret for arranging Dirk's visit, and of course to Dirk himself;  and to those who offered Harvest gifts. All but the perishables will go to Leamington & Warwick Foodbank, as will today's cash collection. Since the foodbank started at the beginning of July, it has supported approximately 300 adults and 100 children who otherwise would have struggled, and it's good to know that we can help this important work in some small way.
